Statement of your Teaching Approach/Philosophy
I have taught at Humber full and part time since 1991. Before and during the first 6 years at Humber, I had my own training company, providing training in the corporate sector. During my hotel career, I took on a number of training roles working with employees one on one or training larger groups in customer service workshops.
I believe that in order to be successful in the classroom, you can never come off to the students that you are superior to them. I also tell my students that I will be working with them during the semester, providing them with some new information, but also I am willing to learn from them and their experiences.
Many students have told me that I teach in way that is simple to understand. They say that I am open and willing to work with all types of students. They say that I am patience in the classroom and treat them with respect.
I believe that I can help my students prepare for what is in store for them in the Hospitality industry. I constantly bring examples from the industry and with my industry experience, I can tell stories of what happened to me in these situations.
I like to have fun in the classroom. I act silly at times to get the attention of the students. I get to know my students and understand who can be joked with, who are serious and who need extra help along the way. I am trying to bring in more technology into the class to engage the student. paulandhiscamera shows up to explain and show students what the industry is all about. Students look forward to these you tube videos in the class.
My overall approach is to have everyone that comes into my classroom have the opportunity to leave knowing something new about the topic. I strive to treat every student equally.
My approach to teaching will not change for the 2013 - 2014 portfolio, in fact it is my philosophy, so I don't see it changing now at this time in my career. I will continue to work with my students in order that they are successful. I will continue to update myself through lunch and learns and college sponsored training sessions and working with my fellow faculty and staff members in HRT. I am incorporating more technologies to engage them and keep them coming to class (see section on classroom activities)
